On ne kiffe pas tant le média en lui-même que les valeurs originelles qu’il incarne : accessibilité, horizontalité, puissance, vérité… Dans les années 1970-1980, ce sont des utopistes et des hackers qui ont bâti l’outil que l’on utilise aujourd’hui quotidiennement.

Pour Paul Graham, « la peinture était à la Renaissance ce que le Hacking est à notre époque [de la multitude] ; on vit les heures de gloire du hacking. » Aussi, si le démiurge renaissant créait selon la maxime « A good painting has to be better than it has to be », le nerd visionnaire agit selon l’adage « Great software requires a fanatical devotion to beauty. »

Mais replaçons-nous dans la grande Histoire. Le processus renaissant est par essence “gazeux” et long. On ne peut clairement l’enfermer dans des dates mais on peut en revanche esquisser de larges orientations. Aussi, l’internet public n’ayant que 25 ans, cela nous place au début du primitivisme. Nous sommes entre la fin de la Chapelle Scrovegni de Giotto et au début des Salles du Palazzo Publico des Frères Lorenzetti. Pas encore de Dome de Santa Maria Del Fiore, pas encore de David, de Mona Lisa, ni de grandes découvertes ou de redécouvertes du Laocoon.

Qu’attendre donc de l’âge de la multitude ? De quelles découvertes et de quelles redécouvertes allons-nous être les témoins ? Questions évidemment trop vastes, que nous évitons bien volontiers mais que nous soumettons à deux groupes, les hackers et les painters, les artistes et les programmeurs.

Sur le terrain de l’internet, certains artistes expérimentent de façon fanatique ces valeurs originelles dans un balécouillisme apparent et vibrant.
